Chevy 350 Head Gasket – Everything You Need to Know

Chevy 350 Head Gasket Replacement Process

Chevy 350 is quite possibly Chevrolet’s most popular small-block engine. But the 350 is popular for its durability, but it doesn’t mean that the engine is problem-free.

A blown cylinder head gasket is usually caused by overheating and results in a substantial loss of power, and harmful mixing of antifreeze and engine oil.

Replacing the head gasket initially seems like an arduous task, but on the Chevy 350, the process is even easier than on many other types of engines.

Follow this simple and easy solar system to replace your Chevy 350 head gasket.

STEP 1

You need to remove the carburetor and distributor from the top of the intake manifold. The carburetor is usually attached to the intake manifold with about four nuts. You need to understand that each nut is at the base of each corner of the carburetor. So you need to remove all the nuts with a wrench, and immediately you have to lift the carburetor away from the intake manifold.

The distributor is held with the intake manifold with a single bolt that is the base of the distributor. Remove the nut, then pull the distributor and remove it.

STEP 2

Now you need to drain the radiator and disconnect the upper radiator hose from the intake manifold. Then you have to loosen all the bolts at the bottom of the radiator on the driver’s side to drain it. The upper radiator hose is usually connected to the front of the intake manifold with a hose clamp that comes with one screw. You need to lose it on the street, then pull the hose away from the intake manifold.

STEP 3

You have to remove the intake manifold and the exhaust manifold including the valve cover. The intake manifold connects the engine with four bolts on each side of the manifold. You need to pull out the bolts, then lift the manifold off the engine. The exhaust manifold is also connected to the side of the cylinder head with six bolts.

You need to remove those bolts with a wrench, and immediately pull the manifold away from the engine until it disconnects from the cylinder head. The valve cover attaches to the top of the cylinder head bolts. Remove the bolts and pull the cover off the cylinder head.

STEP 4

You need to remove the eight rocker arms before you remove the eight pushrods and the cylinder head. Locate all the nuts in the middle of each rocker’s arm. Then, remove the nut on all eight rocker arms until the tip of all rocker’s arms can be twisted from the top of its pushrod; then pull the pushrods out of the engine. Remove the bolts that secure the cylinder head to the engine, then lift the head off the engine. Loosen the old cylinder head gasket.

STEP 5

Now to replace the new cylinder head gasket onto the head’s mating surface on the engine block, you have to lower the cylinder head onto the gasket. Make sure you do not apply a gasket sealer to either side of the head gasket.

You need to install all of the cylinder head’s bolts, tightening the bolt in small increments to ensure that the gasket seats evenly. Slide the pushrods through the cylinder head, before you position the tip of each rocker’s arm over its pushrod and tighten the rocker arm’s bolt.

STEP 6

Now you need to install the valve cover, exhaust manifold, and intake manifold. The valve cover needs to be installed with a new gasket. Coat both sides of the gasket with a gasket sealer, before you start to place the gasket along the lip of the cover. You need to lower the cover onto the cylinder head before you begin to install and tighten the valve cover’s four bolts.

The exhaust manifold has to be installed with a new gasket, but the gasket sealer must be new. Bolt the exhaust manifold to the cylinder head with the new gasket. The manifold uses four gaskets, and they must be covered with gasket sealer.

You need to place the coated gaskets onto the engine before you lower the intake manifold onto the gaskets and install the manifold’s retaining bolts.

STEP 7

Now you need to attach the upper radiator hose to the intake manifold and fill the radiator with antifreeze before you slide the distributor into the engine through the intake manifold to secure the distributor in place with its single retaining bolt.

You have to place the carburetor on top of the engine, then install and tighten each of the carburetor’s four retaining nuts.
