Spring Brakes for Emergency Braking and Parking
Most vehicles with air brakes have a way of stopping if the service brake system fails. Some vehicle manufacturers manufactured emergency braking systems with a parking brake system using spring brakes.
You do not know that spring brakes are not air applied just like service brakes. They apply immediately as air pressure leaves the brake chamber and release when air builds up in the chamber.
Spring brakes are available in different parts and they can be used in different types of brake chambers from service brakes. A brake chamber with service brake and spring brake sections is known as a spring brake chamber.
Spring brake chambers apply the brakes with a large coil spring that provides force so that it can hold the brakes in the applied position, instead of using air to apply the brakes.
Spring brake chambers are different from service brake chambers. To accommodate the large coil spring, one section needs to be added to the service brake chamber which is very visible and adds to its size. The spring brake section is “piggy-backed” onto the service brake section and the two sections function as two separate chambers.
The portion closest to the pushrod end is the service brake section and it works in the same method in a separately mounted service brake chamber.
Spring brakes have to release about 414 kPa (60 psi) of air pressure needed to be supplied to the spring brake chamber before it can compress or “cage” the spring (See Diagram 4-1). If system pressure is not up to 414 kPa (60 psi), the spring brakes begin to apply because there is not enough pressure to keep them released
A lot of vehicles can be driven even with the spring brakes applied due to the braking power of the full-service brake application. Before driving the vehicle, you need to ensure that the air brake system has an air pressure of 414 kPa (60 psi)) so that it will keep the spring brakes from applying.
With a lot of spring brake chambers that are constructed, it is difficult to unintentionally release the spring.
The large coil spring in the spring brake chamber is compressed with very high tension. Tampering, damage, or corrosion will cause the spring to release, and lead to the sudden violent motion of parts of the air brake chamber.
How do Spring Brakes Work?

Immediately you press the brake pedal it will force brake fluid through the master cylinder that passes through the ABS control module. The fluid is capable of reaching the calipers and pressure squeezes pads with the rotors.
Now, it is completely different from passenger cars, and heavy trucks that use air pressure to apply braking power. The difference is in parking brakes. Spring brakes are used as parking brakes, they are found on the rear axle of heavy trucks.

The pressure is applied to the spring side, which allows the parking brake to disengage. Immediately after the spring is decompressed (at 20 lbs), parking brakes will be applied. Air pressure will now hold back the springs as soon as you begin to drive. With this system, a leak is lowering air pressure and causes springs to engage the brakes.

It is very important to remember the lack of braking power of the full-service brake application, so vehicles can only be driven with spring brakes applied. You need to avoid this situation so that the brake system has enough air pressure – 60 psi.
This system was implemented for safety concerns because the trucks that used to have lost air pressure would struggle to reach the controlled stop.
